WeGlow vs GoFundMe: which fits a non-profit?
WeGlow usually fits a non-profit better than GoFundMe: built for organisations, with Belgian tax certificates. GoFundMe wins for personal fundraisers.
For most non-profits in Belgium and the Netherlands, WeGlow is the better fit than GoFundMe. It is built for organisations, handles Belgian tax certificates, and puts events, peer-to-peer fundraising and donor management in the free plan. GoFundMe stays strong for personal fundraisers and for one short campaign that needs wide reach.
WeGlow vs GoFundMe at a glance
GoFundMe charges 2.9% + €0.25 per donation, WeGlow 5%. WeGlow is only for organisations, GoFundMe is also for individuals. These are the five differences.
- Who can start: WeGlow is for organisations such as vzw/asbl and foundations. GoFundMe is open to anyone, including individuals.
- Cost per gift: GoFundMe charges 2.9% + €0.25 per donation. WeGlow charges 5%, and your donor is asked to cover that cost.
- Monthly gifts: on WeGlow the same rate as a one-off gift.
- Subscription: WeGlow has a free plan and a Pro plan at €40 per month. GoFundMe has no subscription.
- Belgian tax certificates: WeGlow lets you send them to all eligible donors with one click. We found no GoFundMe documentation on this.
What does GoFundMe cost a non-profit?
GoFundMe's Dutch pricing page says it costs nothing to create a fundraiser and that donor contributions to GoFundMe are optional. You pay a transaction fee of 2.9% + €0.25 per donation.
GoFundMe also has a lower rate for certified charities (1.9% + €0.35), but on the page we checked that rate is listed for Ireland and the UK. We did not find a published rate for Belgian or Dutch organisations, so ask before you budget with the lower number.
A worked example: 200 gifts of €50 make €10,000. On GoFundMe the transaction fee is 2.9% (€290) plus 200 × €0.25 (€50), so €340. On WeGlow the platform fee is 5%, so €500. If nobody covers it, you pay the full €500. Your own payment provider (Mollie or Stripe) charges its normal fees on top. So it depends on your audience and how you ask.
Why do non-profits pick WeGlow?
Price is not the whole story. The free plan of WeGlow includes:
- Peer-to-peer fundraising with personal fundraiser pages and teams.
- Events with ticketing.
- Monthly gifts, at the same 5% as a one-off gift.
- Donor management with the full gift history per donor.
Pro (€40 per month or €400 per year) adds donation forms you can place on your own website, plus WeGlow Mail and integrations. You use your own colours and logo, and gifts go straight to your organisation's account through your own Mollie or Stripe account. There are no setup fees and no contract. Note that you do need an account on WeGlow.world, even for the free plan.
What about Belgian tax certificates?
In Belgium a gift to a recognised organisation is tax deductible from €40 per calendar year, and since 2024 the donor's national register number must appear on the certificate. WeGlow collects the needed details with the gift and tracks which donors reach the threshold.
You then send the certificates with one click to all eligible donors. It is not automatic, and only recognised organisations may issue certificates. GoFundMe is a global platform and we found no documentation on Belgian certificates.
When does GoFundMe fit?
GoFundMe fits when you raise money for a person (a sick neighbour, a personal situation), because WeGlow cannot be used for that. It also fits when you want one short campaign with the widest possible audience and care mostly about the lowest cost per one-off gift. For those cases 2.9% + €0.25 is a fair rate.
Our conclusion
If you are a Belgian or Dutch vzw, foundation or association that also wants monthly donors, events and tidy records, WeGlow fits better. You pay the same rate for monthly and one-off gifts, you start free, and the tools an organisation needs sit in one place. If you only want the cheapest one-off gift or a personal appeal, look at GoFundMe.
