Christmas fundraising ideas for a charity in France
Ten Christmas fundraising ideas for a French association, from simplest to most ambitious, with the rules to check: reçu fiscal, raffle, collections and GDPR.
In short For an association in France, a successful Christmas fundraiser comes down to three choices: a format suited to your team, permissions arranged well in advance, and a clear donation page. Allow three to six weeks, depending on scale. The reçu fiscal (tax receipt) only applies to eligible organisations, and the rule on contributions in return matters.
this article describes the rules in France.
Here are ideas ranked by effort, with what to check before you start.
How do you choose a Christmas fundraising idea?
Start from three constraints: the number of volunteers, the weeks ahead of you and the venue. With two or three people, favour an online fundraiser. From ten volunteers upwards, a market or a concert becomes possible. Our step-by-step guide is in the article on organising a Christmas fundraiser in France.
The simple ideas, to launch in one to three weeks
Little logistics, few permissions: ideal for small teams.
- A year-end donation appeal by e-mail and on social media, with a link to a donation page.
- A Christmas fundraising pot (cagnotte) run by your volunteers: each one invites their circle to give.
- A charity Advent calendar: one message a day, from 1 to 24 December, telling how a donation is used.
- A charity gifts page where each amount matches a concrete action.
Why start here? You control them from start to finish, with no town hall and no venue.
The friendly ideas, to prepare in three to five weeks
Here, people gather around a shared moment, with a venue and volunteers.
- A charity Christmas meal with a free contribution or a fixed price.
- A concert or a choir in a church, a village hall or a school.
- A sale of cards, chocolates or decorations made by your volunteers.
- A Christmas loto (bingo), under the conditions set out below.
Plan for five to ten people for the room, the till and the welcome, and give every guest a link to your donation page.
The charity Christmas market, for teams of at least ten people
An association Christmas market attracts a new audience, but it takes six weeks or more: pitch, stalls, volunteers, communication. You also need to check the rules on the use of public space with the town hall (mairie). We cover everything in our guide to the charity Christmas market.
A small, well-run market beats a big, half-empty one. Always leave a way to give online.
What the law says about the reçu fiscal and contributions in return
An individual donor can get a tax reduction of 66% of their donation, up to a limit of 20% of their taxable income. The rate rises to 75% for organisations that help people in difficulty, up to €2,000 of donations made since 14 October 2025, and is 66% beyond that.
This information comes from service-public.gouv.fr and from impots.gouv.fr, consulted on 9 October 2026. Three points to remember for your Christmas fundraiser:
- Only eligible organisations issue a reçu fiscal. The organisation must be non-profit, run on a disinterested basis, and not benefit a restricted circle of people.
- The contribution in return is limited. If the donor receives an item or a service, its value must not exceed a quarter of the donation, with a maximum of €65 per year. This applies to calendars, cards and chocolates.
- The donor keeps the receipt. They do not attach it to their tax return.
Not sure whether you are eligible? Ask your tax office (service des impôts) before you promise a receipt.
Raffle, loto, collection and public appeal: what to check
Four rules, taken from the official pages listed at the end of the article. For a specific case, ask your town hall or your prefecture (préfecture).
- Raffle or lottery: prohibited in principle, allowed for associations under conditions. You need the mayor's prior authorisation (the police prefect's in Paris), prizes are in kind, not cash, and the lottery is held on site, not online.
- Traditional loto: possible without authorisation within a restricted circle, with a stake below €20 and no cash prizes.
- Collection on the public highway: it counts as an appeal to public generosity. Ask the town hall or the prefecture before you set foot in the street.
- Threshold of €153,000: beyond this amount collected, a prior declaration to the prefecture and an annual compte d'emploi (statement of how funds were used) are required.
An unauthorised lottery can cost a €90,000 fine and three years in prison.
Writing to your donors without GDPR mistakes
The CNIL, the French data protection authority, distinguishes commercial prospecting, which requires prior consent, from charitable prospecting, which is possible without prior consent if the person was informed when the data was collected and can refuse simply and free of charge. An unsubscribe link appears in every message.
Source: CNIL, page consulted on 9 October 2026. If your e-mail promotes a card sale, the line with commercial prospecting can become blurred: seek legal advice.
How to do it with WeGlow.world
With WeGlow.world, you set up a donation page in three steps: amount, personal details, summary. It accepts one-off and monthly donations, and each amount can carry a label, such as "a hot meal". It displays well on mobile. Your supporters can start their own fundraising page and invite their network.
You can also write a thank-you text, sent automatically after every donation. We do not promise here that WeGlow.world sends tax receipts in France: if your association is eligible, it issues the receipt itself.
Four Christmas experiences are in preparation: the Glow Room, a 3D living room where every donation becomes a decoration on the tree, the Starry Sky, where every donation becomes a star, the Gift Yard, where you choose a setting to fly to the next gift, and the Card Wall, where every card carries a stamp. They are concepts until the official launch. You can find these experiences on the WeGlow.world Christmas page. Create your account to get started for free.
