Online Christmas fundraising for Canadian charities
Plan an online Christmas fundraiser in Canada with a digital Christmas experience, the 2026 federal credit rates, receipt rules and a six week timeline.
In short An online Christmas fundraiser needs one clear story, one donation page and a digital Christmas experience where every gift becomes visible. Plan 4 to 6 weeks, ask 5 to 10 supporters to share it, and finish by December 31, which decides the tax year for your donors. The four experiences are still a concept until launch.
What is an online Christmas fundraiser with a digital experience?
It is a Christmas campaign that lives on one web page instead of in a church hall or a mall. Supporters give online, and each gift becomes something people can see: an ornament, a star, a parcel or a card.
That visibility is the point. A donor who sees their gift appear may be more likely to share the page with family and friends, and your team gets a reason to post an update every few days instead of repeating the same ask.
The four digital Christmas experiences
- Glow Room: a 3D living room with a Christmas tree where every gift becomes an ornament on the tree.
- Starry Sky: every gift becomes a star, and visitors fly from star to star.
- Gift Yard: you choose the setting (forest, village, frozen lake, cabin or library) and visitors fly to the next gift.
- Card Wall: envelopes hang on a string, and every card carries a postage stamp.
To be honest about timing: these four experiences are a concept until the official launch. You can look at them on the Christmas fundraising hub, but do not build your whole plan on them until WeGlow.world confirms they are live.
Which experience fits which charity?
Choose by the feeling your supporters already associate with your cause, not by what looks most impressive. A small team with a warm, close community often does best with something personal. A wider audience may prefer something playful.
- Pick the Glow Room if your story is about togetherness at home.
- Pick the Starry Sky for remembrance, hope or a quiet, calm campaign.
- Pick the Gift Yard for families and children's causes, with a setting that matches your story.
- Pick the Card Wall when supporters want to leave a personal message.
What your donors can claim in Canada in 2026
In Canada the donor claims a federal tax credit on their own return, and it is not refundable. The old shorthand of 15 and 29 percent no longer fits a gift made in December 2026.
According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Finance Canada, the lowest federal rate is now 14 percent, and it applies to the first $200 of donations in a year. Above $200 the credit is 29 percent, and 33 percent for income in the top bracket. Provinces add their own credits.
The gift must be made between January 1 and December 31, and the claim can go up to 75 percent of net income. Unused gifts can be carried forward for up to 5 years. The 14 percent figure for 2026 follows from the lowest rate, so tell donors to check with the CRA for their own situation. For Québec and provincial amounts, ask the CRA or Revenu Québec rather than quoting numbers.
Rules to check before you launch
Three rules decide most of the questions we hear from Canadian charities. Check each one before you announce the campaign, and keep the answers in writing.
- Receipts: only a registered charity with a CRA registration number can issue an official donation receipt. A regular non-profit cannot. Read our guide to donation receipts at Christmas in Canada.
- Raffles: a raffle ticket is not a gift, so it never earns a receipt. Raffles are licensed by the province, and online sales are limited. Ask your provincial gaming authority before you add a prize draw.
- Email: the anti spam law (CASL) exempts messages from a registered charity whose main purpose is raising funds. Other messages need consent, an unsubscribe link and your contact details. In Québec, Law 25 adds privacy duties; ask the Commission d'accès à l'information.
How to do it with WeGlow.world
WeGlow.world is built around a donation page that takes three steps: amount, personal details and a summary. Donors can give once or monthly, each with its own amounts and labels such as "A warm meal". It works on a phone, so donors can give straight from a message on their screen.
Supporters can also start their own fundraiser page for your campaign, so a volunteer can ask their own network. Glowie, the built in assistant, can rewrite your story in a personal, professional or urgent tone. If you add a thank you text, donors get it by email after a gift.
One honest limit: nothing is confirmed about WeGlow.world payments in Canada. If your organization is on WeGlow.world, you can use the page and the experiences; if not, ask the team at contact what is possible for you before you plan around it. You can start free with an account and look around.
A six week plan for an online Christmas fundraiser
Work backwards from December 31. Six weeks is enough for a small team, and you can compress it to 3 or 4 weeks if the story and the page are ready.
- Week 1: confirm your registered charity status, set one goal and one story, and pick an experience.
- Week 2: build the donation page, write the thank you text and test it on a phone.
- Week 3: ask 5 to 10 supporters to start their own pages and give them two ready posts each.
- Weeks 4 and 5: post an update every 3 to 4 days and thank donors by name when they allow it.
- Week 6: push a last reminder before December 31 and send receipts in January.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Canadian charity use the digital Christmas experiences today?
They are a concept until the official launch, so you can preview them but should not promise them to donors yet. Nothing is confirmed about WeGlow.world payments in Canada, so ask the team before you plan around it.
Do donors get a tax receipt for a Christmas gift?
Only if you are a registered charity and issue an official donation receipt with your CRA registration number. The donor then claims a credit on their own return. A raffle ticket does not qualify.
What is the federal credit rate in 2026?
The CRA and Finance Canada describe 14 percent on the first $200 and 29 percent above that, with 33 percent in the top bracket. Provinces add their own credits, so ask the CRA for details.
When must the gift be made to count this year?
Between January 1 and December 31 of the tax year. For a Christmas campaign that means your donors need to give by December 31, so set your last reminder a few days earlier.
Can we add a raffle to the campaign?
Possibly, but raffles are licensed by the province and online sales are limited. Ask your provincial gaming authority first, and never present the ticket price as a charitable gift.
