WeGlow vs Whydonate for Belgian non-profits
Whydonate is cheaper per transaction; WeGlow is a full suite with certificate support. A cost and feature comparison for non-profits.
Whydonate and WeGlow are both free to start with, but they solve different problems. Whydonate is a sharply priced fundraising platform for individuals and organisations. WeGlow is built for Belgian and Dutch non-profits that want their whole fundraising in one place: campaigns, fundraiser pages, events, monthly gifts, donor management and tax certificates. For a typical association we recommend WeGlow. Here is why, and when Whydonate is the better pick.
At a glance
- Whydonate: 0% platform fee, no monthly cost. Payment costs: a flat €0.35 for iDEAL and Bancontact, 1.9% + €0.25 for cards in euro. Donors see an optional tip for Whydonate.
- WeGlow: a free plan with no monthly fee, and a 5% platform fee per donation that your donor is asked to cover. Pro costs €40 a month or €400 a year.
The trade-off: Whydonate is cheaper per transaction. WeGlow gives you a full fundraising suite and Belgian certificate support in return.
What does each one cost?
Whydonate publishes its rates on its own fees page: 0% platform fee, no sign-up fee and no monthly fee. You only pay processing costs, and a donor can add a tip that he or she can set to zero. For recurring gifts, its fees page lists a 3% commission on payments after the first. Worth knowing if monthly donors are your goal.
WeGlow starts free. The platform fee is 5% per donation, and at checkout your donor is asked whether they want to cover it. If they do, the full gift reaches you. If they do not, that 5% is charged to the organisation. Your payment provider (Mollie or Stripe, on your own account) charges its fees separately.
To be fair: on pure transaction costs Whydonate is often cheaper, especially for Bancontact and iDEAL at a flat €0.35. The question is what you get for the difference.
Which tools come with it?
With WeGlow you build more than a donation page:
- campaigns and peer-to-peer fundraising, with fundraiser pages for your supporters;
- events with ticketing;
- one-off and monthly gifts, each with its own amounts and labels;
- donor management where every gift lands automatically;
- WeGlow Mail to email your donors, and donation forms for your own website on the Pro plan;
- Glowie, our AI helper, who drafts campaigns, forms and events so you only review and confirm.
On its public pages Whydonate documents the core of a fundraising platform: an action page, payments and payouts (weekly, monthly or immediate). We did not find a dedicated events or donor-management module there.
Tax certificates in Belgium
Tax certificates keep donors coming back. WeGlow collects what you need at the time of the gift (including the national registry number) and lets you send certificates to all eligible donors with one click. It is not automatic: you stay the issuer.
For Whydonate we found no Belgian certificate module in its public documentation. That is understandable for a platform used in many countries, but it means you handle that paperwork yourself. Ask them directly if it matters to you.
When does Whydonate fit?
- You are raising money as an individual. WeGlow is for organisations, while Whydonate also accepts individuals.
- You want one simple campaign with the lowest possible transaction costs.
- You do not need events, donor management or certificates.
Our recommendation
If you are a vzw, foundation or association that wants to build a donor base rather than run one-off appeals, choose WeGlow. You start free, there is no contract, and you get campaigns, events, monthly gifts, donor management and certificate work in one system, with Glowie helping you write. Whydonate remains a solid choice for a simple, cheap fundraiser.
