Amounts and labels on your donation page: what works

How many amounts should your donation page show and which labels work? Four or five amounts, labels that explain the gift and one time next to monthly.

TL;DR Show four or five amounts on your donation page and give each amount a label that says what the gift does. Leave room for a free amount and show one time and monthly side by side. All examples below are hypothetical. With WeGlow.world you set amounts and labels yourself, and the title, amounts and thank-you text for Giving Tuesday come prefilled.

A donor who lands on your page wants to choose quickly. Too many options cause doubt, too few force guessing. Amounts and labels are the small part of your page where that choice is made, and you can get them right in an hour.

This article is only about that choice. How to build the whole page is covered in the article on the donation page itself.

How many amounts should your donation page show?

Show four or five fixed amounts and a field for a free amount. With fewer than four the choice feels narrow, with more than five the donor starts to hesitate. Put the amounts in ascending order and let an ordinary amount take the middle position.

This is a practical rule of thumb, not a law. After Giving Tuesday, look at which amounts people chose and adjust your page next year. The official GivingTuesday toolkit suggests sending people to a donation page of your own choosing. What goes on it is up to you.

Why do labels work better than bare amounts?

A label says what the gift does, which turns an amount into a choice instead of a number. "25 euros" says little, while "25 euros for a hot meal" shows the donor what their gift means. That gives people a reason to stop at one amount.

Keep labels short, honest and concrete. Do not promise anything you cannot show: if a label says an amount pays for a meal, that must match your work. No label has to be big, half a sentence is enough.

How do you choose the right amounts?

Start from what your work costs and choose amounts that pay for a clear unit, such as a meal, an hour of support or a package. Then look at your existing donors: what did they usually give? Keep the lowest amount easy to accept and the highest one ambitious.

AmountHypothetical labelFor whom
€10A hot meal for one personThose who want to start small
€25A week of sandwiches for breakfastThe typical gift
€50A food parcel for a familyThose who want to do a little more
€100A month of soup for the weekly mealThose who really want to contribute
Free amountEvery gift helps, choose your ownThose with their own amount in mind

This is an example for an imaginary organisation that serves meals. Replace the labels with what your work really delivers and check the amounts against your own costs.

Which labels work?

Labels that name a concrete, small unit work best: a meal, an hour, a book, a tent. Leave out numbers and jargon and write what the gift makes possible. A label is not a slogan and not a story. It is one sentence that makes the amount understandable.

  • Write what the gift does, not what your organisation is
  • Use one unit per label, such as a meal or an hour
  • Keep it under ten words
  • Avoid promises you cannot check
  • Use the same words as in your story and your emails

One time or monthly: how do you show both?

Show one time and monthly as two clear choices above the amounts. A donor first chooses how often they give and then how much. A monthly gift calls for lower amounts, because it is an amount that returns every month.

ChoiceHypothetical amountsHypothetical label
One time€10, €25, €50, €100A meal, a week of breakfast, a parcel
Monthly€5, €10, €15, €25Every month a regular meal for someone

What a monthly gift means for your organisation and how to ask for it is covered in our article on monthly donors.

How do you set amounts and labels in WeGlow.world?

With WeGlow.world your donation page has one time and monthly amounts, each with a label that says what the gift does. The Giving Tuesday preset prefills title, subtitle, amounts and thank-you text in Dutch, English, French and German. You adjust them.

  1. Create a free account on WeGlow.world.
  2. Choose the Giving Tuesday preset for your donation page.
  3. Adjust the amounts to what your work costs.
  4. Write a label next to each amount that says what the gift does.
  5. Check one time and monthly separately.
  6. Fill in your thank-you text, and the thank-you email goes out automatically.

Your page gets your own logo and colour and can show a countdown, a share button and a progress bar with a goal amount. Which payment methods your donors see is covered in the article on payment methods.

The most common mistakes

Most mistakes are easy to fix: too many amounts, labels that explain nothing, amounts that do not fit your work and a monthly option that is hidden. Walk through your page on your phone beforehand, because that is where most people give.

  • More than five amounts, so people hesitate
  • Labels like "Support us" that explain nothing
  • Amounts that do not match what your work costs
  • One time and monthly mixed with no clear difference
  • A page you have never looked at on a phone

Frequently asked questions

How many amounts do I put on my donation page?

Four or five, plus a free amount. That is clear enough to choose quickly. In WeGlow.world you adjust the amounts, even when the Giving Tuesday preset has already filled them in.

Do I have to put a label on every amount?

You do not have to, but it helps. A label shows what a gift does. With WeGlow.world you write a label next to each amount that says what the gift does.

What is a good lowest amount?

Choose an amount almost nobody will refuse, for example ten euros. It depends on your audience. Look at what your existing donors gave and adjust your page in WeGlow.world after Giving Tuesday.

May I show one time and monthly with different amounts?

Yes, that is wise, because a monthly gift is usually lower. WeGlow.world has one time and monthly amounts separately, each with its own label.

Are the examples in this article real figures?

No, all amounts and labels are hypothetical and do not come from a real organisation. Do not copy them, but calculate with your own costs, also when you use WeGlow.world.
